This week the high school art classes started clay. We are working on two projects, texture tiles and throwing on the wheel. I order for everyone to be able to throw, I alternate throwing days, while some students are throwing, the others are hand-building. This week we will be continuing to work on our shaded grid drawings. Some of the students have chosen to use photos using a Flinthills or ranching theme so that they can be displayed at the Greenwood County Cattlewomen's art show. The students are creating their own speaker designs. We work in two groups so while one group is building in clay, the other will be working on an Escher Abstraction design. This design takes information the student has learn this year and in past years and pull it all together creating a shaded abstract drawing.

They used both real life video and photographs of reptiles and other lizards as subject inspiration. They also will be starting a Grid shaded drawing on Friday that requires a photograph due to Mrs. Bolinger by Monday for printing. Video clip about the lesson: https://youtu.be/uauwmiQaVZ4 Video clip from Coal Black Exotics: https://youtu.be/fsjrEuf2E4Q We will also be finishing our second wheel throw bowl, the requirements for this bowl are that it needs to be at least 2 inches tall and must have an original design on it. It is also due on Thursday Feb. 1st. We are starting our first project of the new year.
We are trying out a new project using a new media, pastel. The students are drawing a dragon’s eye then coloring them in pastel and charcoal. They used both real life video and photographs of reptiles and other lizards as subject inspiration. We are starting our final projects for this semester this week. I am trying a new material for printing this year, it’s called Soft-Kut and it is similar to linoleum when used to print. We are printing self-portraits that we took using the our ipads/phones and converted into a polarized format with the Imaengine app. Video clip about the Lino block printing process we will be using. https://vimeo.com/19641694?ref=em-v-share We are hand building a small bowl using a slab method that takes a shape and builds off that shape to create a whole. The students will use the cookie cutters to cut out multiple pieces of the same shape. Once cut, they will overlap those shapes to create the bowl itself. This is the last week for both our Cindy Dauer Dog Project and our first thrown pot on the wheel.
At this point, most of the students have converted their drawing to the watercolor paper and are painting the dog, once painted, all they have left is to add the finishing patterns. These are the video clip they will need for this week’s project: Dog project https://youtu.be/z0STICqWAGc Watercolor refresher https://youtu.be/H7FWA1_s0LA We have been throwing now for a month, everyone has at least one pot that they need to finished with a foot. Once pot #1 has been fired for the first time, it will need to be glazed and then fired again. These are the video clips needed for throwing: Throwing 101 https://youtu.be/8pTawj8v0p8 Adding the foot https://youtu.be/0rsKNZ104io We are in the thick of two project this week, the first is our Cindy Dauer Dog Project and the second is our first thrown pot on the wheel. At this point, most of the students have written their story about their dog and have started the beginning sketch of dog. During class this week, they will get the sketch converted to the watercolor paper and paint the dog, once painted, they might have time to add the finishing patterns. If they are still working on that first pot, we will work together this week to get one that will work.
